FADES & WAVES was curated in October of 2016 by 19 year old me, Marlique Straughter. A third year marketing major at Hampton University who enjoyed barbering as a hobby. It was not until two years later, in 2018, that the 'thing' I once considered "just a hobby", would become my primary source of income, post graduation. I have been cutting hair since I was 13 years old but never thought twice about turning it into a profession.

 

 

While enrolled in the introduction of entrepreneurship at Hampton University,, it dawned on me  that I needed an Instagram account dedicated solely to barbering. This account would become my professional page and assist me in raising awareness of the services I provided on campus. Seeking a title that was both clever and catchy; two words stood out more than most,  "FADES & WAVES."

 

As I mentioned before, it was just a hobby, while I was very much a full time student in college. Occasionally, I would post a picture showcasing some of my work but it was not until June, 2018 that I would fully immerse myself in the industry and identify with being a barber. It has been a journey, for sure but the story is still being written.
